Dyscovered is a registered UK charity, based in North Yorkshire.
It was founded by a family whose children have various learning difficulties, including dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia.
After seeing first hand how difficult life can be for children who find reading, writing, maths, concentration and co-ordination difficult, they decided to start a charity to provide support and activities.
This enables our members to meet others with similar difficulties, and to take part in workshops and social events together, in a fun and supportive environment.
We are currently raising funds to rent a property, provide multi-sensory learning tools, run weekly activities for our members, and provide homework clubs …. as well as providing access to the specialist support that can make the difference between educational and personal success and failure.
We are determined to provide support to all the children who need us. Our fundraising will ensure that those who need our support most will receive it, irrespective of their economic background.
The equation is very simple: the more money we raise, the more we can do to help.
We have already run several workshops and it is wonderful to see how little it takes to provide our members with opportunities to increase their self-confidence.
Our ultimate aim is to be able to run several groups each week, as we consider the social aspect of Dyscovered to be as important as the educational value we can offer.
Everyone needs somewhere to belong, and often children with learning difficulties feel isolated.
Dyscovered can offer them the opportunity to learn new skills in an understanding and supportive environment, whilst socialising with other children with similar difficulties to their own.
Places at Dyscovered are free or low cost. Members and their families are encouraged to help us in our fundraising activities, and to play a key role in the way we are run.
The atmosphere at Dyscovered sessions is informal and low-key. Many of the learning opportunities are so subtle that the children don’t even realise they are learning!
Members are encouraged to develop strategies to lessen the impact of their difficulties, and realise that they are not alone.
Dyscovered is well aware that the most important element required for effective learning is self-confidence. We want children to know that their literacy and/or numeracy difficulties need not stop them from reaching their potential, from having ambitions, and from being whatever they want to be.
Many of the children to whom literacy and numeracy proves difficult also have other issues, such as problems with organisational skills and co-ordination; we help with these difficulties to. Our aim is to help each child as an individual; there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution.
From creative writing courses, theatre trips, sporting opportunities, art classes, performing art workshops, and drumming sessions, to practical sessions in cooking, woodworking, computing, construction, and design, we will help our members discover that they do not need to be defined by their literacy or numeracy difficulties.
The impact of having a specific learning difficulty, or of developing your literacy and numeracy skills at a slower pace than your peers, can be huge, and very isolating. We want to provide a strong and reassuring safety net for these children and their families.
Parents and carers will be given advice, support and practical skills to help them to help their children maximise their potential. They will have the opportunity to talk together, and help each other.
The children will learn that they have talents and abilities that they can use to help others; it is very important that we are able to foster their feelings of self-worth.
Please make a donation today, and help us provide a caring safe-haven in which these children can develop, explore and flourish together. So many of them are currently struggling, and it is vital that we can get our groups up and running on a regular basis as soon as possible.
